Tina TurnerEight-time Grammy Award winner and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Tina Turner is making her long-awaited return to the Bay Area this weekend, bringing what's likely to be her farewell tour to HP Pavilion in San Jose for two nights. An iconic performer who crossed from R&B to rock and back again over the course of her career, Turner started on her road to fame when she met and started singing with established rock 'n' roll pioneer Ike Turner and his revue in her teens.
The partnership would prove fruitful as the leggy singer's dynamic stage presence and frenetic dancing became a centerpiece for the revue's live show. By the early '60s, the pair were scoring hits and wowing audiences all over the world. A partnership with producer Phil Spector led to more chart success including the radio staples "River Deep, Mountain High" and their high-energy cover version of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary."
Despite their growing popularity, Ike's escalating drug problems and iron-fisted rule over Tina eventually drove the singer to leave him after one particularly bad beating in 1976. Though she travelled a long road to finally establish her solo career (for years, major label didn't see an audience for her), Turner managed a spectacular comeback with the multi-platinum album 'What's Love Got To Do With It.' That effort began a string of smash releases and sold-out tours that cemented Turner as one of the biggest solo acts in modern music history as she expanded her sights to include acting (in the hit film 'Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome') and writing (for her powerful autobiography 'I, Tina,' which would be made into a blockbuster film as well).
Though she took an extended break from touring since 2000, the 68-year-old Turner has launched a new tour featuring a brand new stage show spotlighting a career-spanning range of hits over the course of two hours. will feature hit after hit spanning Turner’s entire career with stunning production, an incredible band and innovative choreography courtesy of Toni Basil.San JoseHP Pavilion (formerly Compaq Center)7:30 p.m.$59.50-$15010/19/200810/20/2008MusicRockPopSoul
