McCoy Tyner Trio with Marc Ribot As a member of John Coltrane's "classic quartet" of the 1960s, jazz legend McCoy Tyner helped make an indelible mark on music history. The pianist's powerful, distinctive chords and sparkling melodic runs have also graced more than 50 of his own albums, from early classics like 'The Real McCoy,' 'Tender Moments' and Expansions to his more recent efforts like the Grammy-nominated 'McCoy Tyner Plays John Coltrane: Live at the Village Vanguard.'
Tyner must hold a special place in his heart for the Bay Area; between frequent appearances as part of the San Francisco Jazz Festival and an annual two-week residency at Yoshi's that lasted over a decade, the pianist always seems to be spending time here. For this run of shows at Yoshi's Oakland location, the pianist and his celebrated trio featuring drummer Eric Gravatt and bassist Gerald Cannon will be joined a by special guest -- famed downtown NYC guitarist Marc Ribot.
A cutting-edge player who has collaborated with Tom Waits, Elvis Costello and John Zorn in addition to leading his own eclectic ensembles, the guitarist and Tyner will recreated some of the incendiary music heard on Tyner's recently released album 'Guitars' which found the piano player teaming with Ribot as well as such stellar talents as John Scofield and Bill Frisell.OaklandYoshi's 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sun.$20-$35 ($5-$30 for 2 p.m. Sunday matinee)11/18/200811/23/2008MusicJazz
